Amending the Mental Health Act

23 March 2006: Government abandons the new Mental Health Bill and announces changes to the 1983 Act

The Government announced that it would abandon its plans to publish a new Mental Health Bill because of concerns about its length and complexity and pressures on Parliamentary time.

In its place, the Government intends to honour its promise to reform mental health legislation by amending current law. The three principles guiding the reform will be:
